Cold Water Spinnerbait

Being 39 degrees today, I thought I'ld get the boat in the water to prove some things out after sitting in the cold for forty days and nights. The sun made it comfortable enough and water temps at the Longview ramp had raised to 37 degrees. After running the Nitro through its paces a few times, I caved in and started to fish.

Jigs on deep points didn't get me a bite nor was anything active on sunny flats. You could find warmer water on flats but nothing above 40 degrees. Heading up Mouse Creek was an alternative that I had confidence in. Stopping at each channel bend I was able to hook up a few croppie when lifting a drop shot ! Not excited at all about the crappie, the next channel bend got a new treatment; 9/16 spinnerbait with one huge willow blade.

Getting it down in 25 feel of water was a bit of a challenge. Some added lead in front of the hook shank did the trick though. After five hours and three little crappie, I landed two largemouth off of the next two timbered channel bends ! Slow rolling a spinner bait from Secret Weapon literally was a secret weapon.

The point here is this; don't let the cold keep you in ! Dress accordingly, treat the boat extra extra nice (that plastic gets brittle) and be patient ! With some probing, good sonar, and the right cold weather gear, you'll find some active bass. Check out those spinnerbaits at www.secretweaponlures.com.

We'll be posting more information here and at the team site www.menofbass.com.
